Purpose

NHANES II data files are available for download from the website as self-extracting zipped files (.EXE) in ASCII format. To use these files you need to create a directory in which to save them, download the data files, accompanying SAS programs and documentation, and extract and create NHANES II datasets in permanent libraries.

Task 1: Create a Directory

You will create a directory to save your ASCII files, accompanying SAS programs, documentation, and SAS data files. This will help keep your ASCII files and SAS datasets organized.

Task 2: Download Data Files, Accompanying SAS Programs, and Documentation

You need the data files and accompanying SAS programs to create your analytic dataset, and you need the documentation for reference as you continue your analysis.

Task 3: Extract and Create NHANES II Datasets in Permanent Libraries

After downloading the compressed ASCII data files and accompanying SAS programs, you will need to extract the ASCII files and create the SAS datasets. The ASCII files are not usable in SAS without completing this task.
