Public Education Center

The Public Education Center (PEC) is dedicated to increasing public understanding—especially among students and teachers—of international conflicts and nonviolent approaches that can be used to manage them. Covering 20,000 square feet on two floors, the Center will engage visitors through informational displays, multimedia exhibits, simulations, games, films, and other learning devices. Learn more about the PEC's layout and its goals and themes.

Witness Station

While waiting to enter the orientation theater, visitors may interact with the Witness Stations, video kiosks that allow visitors to stand face to face with people who have experienced war and been involved in peacebuilding efforts.

Theater* and Film

An opening, scene-setting film will trace the evolution of war and peacebuilding in a changing world, preparing visitors for the Education Center exhibits and interactive displays.

*In recognition of the generous support of the Chevron Corporation, this theater will be named the Chevron Theater.

Conflict Zone

An interactive map of the world will display emerging and active conflicts, as well as highlight peacebuilding efforts underway around the globe.

Visitors will learn that conflicts, while individually unique, have basic phases. Visitors will also learn about the many tools and techniques peacebuilders can use to help prevent the outbreak of fighting, make peace when fighting occurs, and stabilize war-torn societies after the fighting ends.

Peace Lab

In a setting that combines a classic laboratory and a “situation room,” visitors will engage in hands-on, experiential learning. The open design concept of the Peace Lab will encourage visitors to access the exhibits in any order they choose. Students will be able to review important case studies, diagnose conflicts using basic analytical frameworks, apply strategies of intervention and develop peacebuilding skills.

Contemplation

The contemplation area will provide a quiet, meditative setting, where visitors can reflect on their journey through the PEC. Enveloped in a spare yet evocative space combining a soothing water element with a generous gathering area, visitors will be encouraged to take time to consider the meaning of their recent experience.
