WASHINGTON, May 19, 1998 – The Senate confirmed Dr. Sue Bailey on May 14 to fill the vacant post of assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.

Once President Clinton accepts the confirmation of his nominee, Bailey could be sworn in as early as the last week of May, Pentagon officials said.

Bailey will fill a position vacated more than a year ago by Dr. Stephen Joseph. Dr. Edward Martin served as the acting assistant secretary until his retirement in April. Since that time, Gary Christopherson, principal deputy assistant secretary, has filled the lead role in health affairs.

A veteran physician with clinical, academic and management experience, Bailey served in the DoD health office as deputy assistant secretary from July 1994 to June 1995.
