WASHINGTON, July 30, 2006 – The Afghan National Army and coalition forces killed 20 Taliban extremists yesterday after the enemy fighters attempted an ambush from a compound in the Shahidi Hass district of Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province.
The combined force repelled the Taliban’s small-arms and rocket-propelled-grenade fire, killing the extremists.
There were no reported injuries to Afghan civilians, Afghan soldiers or coalition forces.
“Afghan and coalition forces will continue to destroy the enemies of Afghanistan who attempt to operate in Uruzgan province,” Army Col. Thomas Collins, a coalition spokesman, said. “Through our relentless pursuit, we will eliminate extremism and those who attempt to terrorize this country.”
In other news from Afghanistan, a Combined Joint Task Force 76 investigation found no evidence of coalition involvement in the reported attack on an Afghan parliament member’s family July 5.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, the task force commander, approved the official investigation, which concerned an allegation that coalition forces fired on, killed and injured the family.
Afghan parliament member Abdul Khaliq had accused coalition forces of attacking a civilian vehicle carrying members of his family. The investigation determined that coalition forces were not operating in the area on that day, U.S. officials said.
