WASHINGTON, July 28, 2006 – A Marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died yesterday due to enemy action while operating in Iraq’s Anbar province, and Defense Department officials have identified earlier casualties. The name of the deceased Marine is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, DoD officials have identified three soldiers and a sailor killed earlier in Iraq and Afghanistan: - Army Staff Sgt. Christopher W. Swanson, 25, of Rose Haven, Md., died on July 22 in Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his patrol encountered enemy small-arms fire. Swanson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.
- Army Capt. Jason M. West, 28, of Pittsburgh, died July 24 in Ramadi when he encountered enemy small-arms fire. West was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Friedberg, Germany.
- Army Spc. Andrew Velez, 22, of Lubbock, Texas, died July 25 in Sharona, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related injury. Velez was assigned to the Corps Support Battalion, Theater Support Command, Fort Irwin, Calif. This incident is under investigation, officials said.
- Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Edward A. Koth, 30, of Towson, Md., died July 26 at Camp Victory, Iraq, after ordnance exploded during a disposal operation. Koth was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eight, serving with Multinational Corps Iraq in Baghdad. The incident is under investigation.
