Norway documents continental shelf off Bouvet Island and Dronning Maud Land

Norway has now submitted documentation on the extent of the continental shelf off Bouvet Island and Dronning Maud Land to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, which is based in New York.

Biannual address to the Storting on important EU and EEA matters

- In my view, the Government has a clear responsibility to work systematically to ensure the functioning and integrity of the EEA Agreement. The Government is mindful of this responsibility, Foreign Minister Støre said in his address to the Storting on 5 May 2009 on important EU and EEA matters.

New agreement between Norway and the UK on economic zones

On 30 April, Norway and the UK entered into an agreement on the boundary between the countries’ economic zones. Rolf Einar Fife, Director General of the Legal Affairs Department of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented: - This agreement creates clarity and predictability both for the authorities and for private actors.

The Arctic Council recommends measures to combat climate change and safeguard Arctic environment

“Climate change and increased access to Arctic waters call for closer Arctic cooperation. I am pleased that the Arctic Council today has identified a number of measures to combat climate change and protect the Arctic environment,” said Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Never before have so many high-level representatives from member states, or so many other nations – observers and interested partners – attended a Council meeting. The Arctic Council is emerging as the key decision shaping body on Arctic affairs, Foreign Minister Støre said in his welcome remarks.

Gore calls melting ice a global wake-up call

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Al Gore, ministers from Europe, the Americas and Asia, and some of the world’s leading experts on snow and ice melting met in Tromsø, Norway, today. Mr Gore and Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who co-chaired the conference, decided to establish a task force which will report on these issues to the climate conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Opening statement at Melting Ice Conference

There is indeed a risk that we will be among the last to live in a time of bountiful ice and snow; but such a future is not inevitable. I sincerely believe that today will mark one important step towards a different future, one where longing for the first winter’s snow remains a basic part of the human experience, Foreign Minister Støre said during his opening of the conference.
