Scope and Content Note

The papers of Muriel Gardiner (1901-1985) span the years circa 1890-1986, with the bulk of the items concentrated in the period 1946-1984. The collection focuses on Gardiner's long association with Sergius Pankejeff, the "Wolf-Man" of Freudian analysis, whose biography, The Wolf-Man, Gardiner edited in 1971. Gardiner had become acquainted with Pankejeff while living in Vienna during the 1920s and 1930s; for many years she was his analyst. Included in the papers are correspondence, various photographs and slides (all relating to Pankejeff, his family, and his artwork), numerous manuscripts of writings, and miscellaneous research and publishing matter. Among the correspondents besides Pankejeff are Felix Augenfeld, K. R. Eissler, Anna Freud, Ernest Jones, and Stephen Spender.
