Plans for the SS United States
late 1940s
Big blueprints for "the Big Ship"
This is the original ship design for the SS United States. The trans-Atlantic liner known affectionately as "the Big Ship" made her maiden voyage from New York City on July 4, 1952. In service on the high seas for just 17 years, the 990-foot-long vessel was, perhaps, the greatest passenger ship ever built for operation under the American flag.
