Determining the Recyclables Stream: Under Federal regulation, the government is required to have a recycling program in place for every owned or leased building with 100 or more federal employees as long as a market exists:

  1. If custodial contractors are responsible for recycling, receipts for materials recycled should be collected from them each month. If this service is not part of their contract, language should be inserted into the contract making this a requirement:

    "Recycling Report". The contractor shall submit a monthly report listing the types and amounts of materials recycled as directed. This may include paper, corrugated containers, newspaper, aluminum cans, bottles, plastic, fluorescent tubes, carpeting, and other materials.
  2. If there is a separate recycling sales contract, the recycling contractor should submit a monthly report showing the amounts and types of materials recycled, along with scale tickets to support the weights given.
