President Bush to Recognize Nashville Student for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Phuong Le upon arrival in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, May 27, 2004. A graduating senior at Glencliff High School, Le is an active volunteer with the Siloam Family Health Center in Nashville.

The USA Freedom Corps is President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetime. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with hundreds of individuals around the country, like Le, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

For the past six years, Le has been a volunteer with the center. Every Saturday morning and after school two nights a week, she helps with staffing the front desk, organizing charts and patient flow, and she serves as a Vietnamese interpreter for patients with limited proficiency in English. Le’s association with the clinic began when she was 12 years old and accompanied her mom to the Siloam Family Health Center for treatment. Because of the language barrier between her mom and the doctors, Le became the interpreter for the medical staff. She noticed that other patients needed help from an interpreter, and shortly thereafter, began volunteering at the center. The Siloam Family Health Center is an interdenominational ministry which provides healthcare to the uninsured.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corpsoffice at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
