President Bush to Recognize Air Force Academy Cadet for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Gloria Moran when he arrives in Colorado
Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. A graduating cadet at the United
States Air Force Academy, Moran is an active volunteer mentor with Big Brothers
Big Sisters Pikes Peak.
The USA Freedom Corps is President Bush’s initiative to engage all Americans
in service to their neighbors and their nation by volunteering two years or
4,000 hours over the course of their lifetime. Since January 2002, President
Bush has met with hundreds of individuals around the country, like Moran, who
are answering the call to volunteer service.
Moran has been a volunteer with Falcon Club, a partnership between the United
States Air Force Academy and Big Brothers Big Sisters Pikes Peak, for the past
three years. In addition to mentoring a student from the local community, Moran
served on the cadet staff for Falcon Club, helping plan and organize events for
the cadets and their Little Brothers and Sisters. She was named the Falcon
Club’s 2003 and 2004 Big Sister of the Year and last year’s Falcon Club Cadet of
the Year.
In addition, Moran volunteered with Arnold Air Society, an honorary service
organization, helping staff soup kitchens, working trail clean-ups, and
performing yard work for the elderly. She also helped launch a reading program
at Antelope Trails Elementary School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to tutor
first through fifth-graders who have difficulty reading.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to
Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our
homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
