President Bush to Recognize Detroit Student for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Lenwood Compton when he arrives at Oakland
County International Airport on Monday, October 14. As a second year member of
AmeriCorps, Compton tutors children in grades 1 through 3.
In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to
dedicate at least two years over their lifetime to service to their communities,
our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Compton as an
example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans
through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Compton, a full time college student, is completing his second year as a
member of AmeriCorps, serving 15 hours each week. Compton tutors children in
grades 1 through 3 in reading and writing. He also provides academic help to
children in the PATH (Pontiac Area Transitional Housing) afterschool program.
For the past four years, Compton has been an active volunteer with MALD
(Michigan Association for Leadership Development), a program that provides
positive role models for African American boys ages 10 through 16. Compton has
adopted two young men in the program as "little brothers."
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
