President Bush to Recognize Harrisburg Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Nancy Fierer when he arrives in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Friday, November 1st. Fierer is the founder and
volunteer program director of Susquehanna Service Dogs, a program that provides
service dogs and hearing dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities.
In his State of the Union address, President Bush called on all Americans to
dedicate at least two years over their lifetime to service to their communities,
our country and the world. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country who are answering the call to service and will recognize Fierer as an
example of the dedication to service he is hoping to instill in all Americans
through his USA Freedom Corps initiative.
Fierer volunteers 60 hours each week with the Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD)
program, managing four full-time employees and more than 140 individuals and
families who volunteer regularly to help train service dogs to meet the needs of
individuals with disabilities. Founded by Fierer in 1993, the SSD program now
operates in 23 Pennsylvania counties and has trained and placed more than 80
service dogs with individuals in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Virginia.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through
the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the
call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect
our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or
by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
