Joint Project Will Provide Needed Access

Fishing pier

Parking area construction

Lake: Ouachita River

Partners: USACE; Arkansas Game and Fish Commission; Union County, Arkansas; Friends of Felsenthal; US Fish & Wildlife Service

Partnership Type: MOU

Corps POC: Richard Magby, Park Ranger

Story: On 15 March 2003, an agreement was signed that will bring about a much-needed and requested new facility to users of the Ouachita River in South Arkansas. With this agreement, a new fishing pier was built near Felsenthal Lock and Dam in Huttig, Arkansas. The pier is handicapped accessible and lighted. Much thought and planning went into the design of the pier since it is on a river system and is prone to fluctuating water levels. The pier was designed with two levels so that it would be usable as river levels rise. The paved parking area will hold 27 vehicles. The fill material for its construction came from another project area, which will create a boat channel at a nearby campground. This new pier will give much needed access to those who wish to go fishing but do not have a boat or to those who are not physically able to fish from a boat.
