I. Background Information

Measure/ Source:

  • Social Skills and Positive Approach to Learning (Parent Report)
  • Items modified from the Entwisle Scale of Personal Maturity (Entwisle et al., 1987), and the Social Skills Rating System (Elliott, Gresham, Freeman and McCloskey, 1988).

Purpose of Measure:

As used in the Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES): The Behavior Problems scale assesses social skills such as making friends and accepting their ideas as well as positive approaches to learning such as enjoying learning and trying new things.

Population Measure Developed With:

  • 2479 children in FACES sample between the ages of 3 and 5.

  • The FACES sample was randomly drawn from a stratified probability sample of 43 Head Start programs selected to represent the universe of Head Start programs in the 50 states, excluding migrant programs and American Indian programs.

Key Constructs of Measure:

Positive Behavior. Respondents were asked to rate their child’s social skills and positive approaches to learning by rating their children’s skills in making friends and accepting their ideas, enjoying learning and trying new things, showing imagination, comforting/helping others, and wanting to hear positive feedback. Each of seven behavior items is rated on a three-point scale ranging from “not true” to “very true or often true.” A summary score ranges from zero to 14, with higher scores representing more positive behavior.

Parent or guardian of children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old.

Trained interviewers/field staff
