Introduction to FACES Instruments 2000

FACES 2000 is a national longitudinal study of the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of Head Start children; the characteristics, well-being, and accomplishments of families; the observed quality of Head Start classrooms; and the characteristics, needs, and opinions of Head Start teachers and other program staff. Although FACES 2000 has the same goals and objectives as FACES it includes a new nationally representative sample of 43 Head Start programs and 2,825 children and their families. The data collection time frame for FACES 2000 is Fall 2000 through Spring 2003 and includes 4 data collection points - Fall 2000, Spring 2001, Spring 2002, and Spring 2003. Children are studied from entry into Head Start, through one or two years of program participation, with kindergarten year follow-up.

Measures used to assess child outcomes in FACES 2000 are presented below. Parent, classroom, and staff measures included in FACES 2000 will be posted at a later date. For each child measure listed here, the following details are provided if available:

  1. Background Information (measure/source, purpose of measure, population measure developed with, key constructs of the measure, norming of measure),
  2. Administration of Measure (who is the respondent to the measure, who administers measure/training required, setting), and
  3. Functioning of Measure (reliability, validity, sensitivity to environmental variation, concerns, comments & recommendations).

Child measures were compiled by Alberto Sorongon, Kwang Kim, and Nicholas Zill, Westat, Inc. for a June 2002 workshop "Children's Early Learning, Development, and School Readiness: Conceptual Frameworks, Constructs, and Measures" that was sponsored by NICHD, ACF, and ASPE within the Department of Health and Human Services.
