Reference Services

Visitors to the Center are welcome. Inquiries may be made in person, by telephone, fax, mail, or email. Researchers may work in the Center's small (temporary) reading room, which holds a ready reference collection of secondary literature. Those needing extensive assistance are kindly requested to make an appointment ahead of time.

Publications

Examples of the Center's publications include Some Paradoxes to Ponder: The Puzzling and not entirely Welcome Development of Childrens Literature since the Nineteen Sixties (1996), Marc Simont at the Library of Congress (1995), Leo Lionni at the Library of Congress (1993), Vital Connections: Children, Science and Books (1991), Window on Japan (1990), Stepping away from Tradition: Children's Books of the Twenties and Thirties (1988). A list of publications is available on request.

Programs and Exhibitions

The Center organizes lectures, symposia, celebrations, exhibitions, and tours. Examples of the Center's programs are the annual International Children's Book Day celebrations, which focus on the art of children's book makers, and the thematic Children's Book Week programs. Program topics have been Japanese children's literature and television, American children's books of the 1920s and 1930s, science in children's books, children's book collecting, the art and design of picture books, and the editing and publishing of children's books. Numerous children's book personalities have been honored by these programs, including Eric Carle, Susan Cooper, Antonio Frasconi, Betsy Hearne, Madeline L'Engle, Iona Opie, Katherine Paterson, and Maurice Sendak.

Exhibitions include The Art of Vera B. Williams (1995) and From Sea to Shining Sea - An American Sampler: Childrens Books from the Library of Congress (1998).
