Child Support Enforcement

America’s children need and deserve financial and emotional support from both parents.

  • 20 million child support cases nationally
  • 50% receive minimal or no support
  • $4 billion in court ordered support unpaid annually

Child Support Program

  • Federally Funded: Through the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE)
  • State Administered: Through the State Child Support Enforcement (CSE) Agency
  • Locally Provided: Through county area offices

Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement Responsibilities

  • Setting policy and procedures
  • Providing oversite and technical assistance
  • Providing funding and maintaining records
  • Coordinating child support enforcement efforts

Each State is Responsible for

  • Locating non-custodial parents
  • Establishing paternity
  • Establishing support orders using State guidelines
  • Enforcing support orders
  • Reviewing and adjusting orders
  • Monitoring and distributing collections
