By Ellen Frede, Gera Jacobs, Shannon Riley-Ayers, Judi Boyd Stevenson
June 2008

Summary: This Microsoft PowerPoint describes the development of the Early Learning Scale (ELS), which is a systematic performance-based assessment for preschool children. The ELS includes math; science; social emotional development; social studies; language arts literacy; creative arts; and health, safety, and physical education. The benefits of play are highlighted: (1) helps children develop self-regulation, (2) leads to more cooperative and longer lasting interactions among children, (3) promotes memory development, (4) extends vocabulary, and (5) results in thinking that is more imaginative and flexible. Examples are included of the use of the ELS in New Jersey and South Dakota.
