What states can learn about state standards and assessment systems from No Child Left Behind documents and interviews with Central Region assessment directors (PDF)
By Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning , Ed.
March 2008

Summary: This study describes the No Child Left Behind requirements for State standards and assessment systems. It examines official documents and peer review decision letters and includes interviews with State assessment directors in the Central Region to highlight the challenges States face in developing and implementing approved systems. Findings show that states must develop challenging academic content standards in mathematics and reading and language arts to establish a foundation for a high quality assessment system. Seven detailed checklists are appended (i.e., one for each of the required components for State assessment systems under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001).
