It identifies what early childhood professionals must know, be able to do, and care about to provide quality early care and education. The eight core content areas used to organize Virginia’s Competencies for Early Childhood Professionals include: (1) Health, Safety, and Nutritional Practices; (2) Understanding Child Growth and Development; (3) Appropriate Classroom Observation and Assessment; (4) Partnering with Families and Communities; (5) Learning Environment; (6) Effective Interactions; (7) Program Management; and (8) Teacher Qualifications and Professional Development.
