News from the Rio de Janeiro Office

New Services Added to Cooperative Acquisitions Program

The Rio Office is now offering--on an experimental basis--limited desk space and the use of a car and driver for bibliographers from Cooperative Acquisitions Program participant libraries. Only officially designated representatives of participating libraries are eligible. These services must be requested at least one month prior to the date when they will be needed.

Desk space is for one week only. Use of the car and driver for acquisitions work within the city limits of Rio is limited to a maximum of two working days and is at the discretion of the Field Director.

Congressional Research Analyst Visits Brazil

Larry Storrs, specialist in Latin American Affairs for the Congressional Research Service, visited Brazil from July 30 through August 7 to update an annual Congressional report on Brazilian economics and politics. His trip took him to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia where he met with representatives from the commercial, economic, and political sectors, in addition to Brazilian and American government officials.

On your MARC, get set, go!

MARC has finally arrived in Brazil! To encourage further adoption of MARC standards, the Rio Office co-sponsored MARC training seminars with the United States Information Agency (USIA) and the Brazilian National Library, August 24-26. The seminars, conducted in Portuguese, were for Brazilian catalogers responsible for cataloging materials using MARC-compatible systems.

Two sessions were held in Rio--one for National Library catalogers only, and another for catalogers from other Rio and São Paulo state institutions. Additional sessions were held in Brasilia. Carla Dewey of the MINITEX Regional Library Network in Minnesota was selected by USIA to conduct the seminars.

NACO Training at the University of São Paulo

The University of São Paulo (USP) was selected to be the first site in Brazil to receive training for the LC-coordinated NACO project for name and serials authorities. Stuart Stone of LC's History and Literature Cataloging Division trained USP cataloging librarians from September 14-18.
