The mission of the Kuala Lumpur suboffice is to acquire material from Malaysia and Brunei. The routine work of the suboffice is the collection and processing of print and nonprint material for use by the Library of Congress and other U.S. government agencies as well as research institutions and universities in North America, Australia, and Asia. The suboffice annually collects about 500 monographs and 580 serials. Material is acquired in English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil on a variety of subjects including sociology, government, politics, and geography. Of particular note is the unique material that the suboffice has collected from governmental organizations, the private sector, and NGOs concerning political issues in Malaysia.

After a preliminary bibliographic record has been made, the material is sent to the Jakarta office and other overseas offices to be cataloged, bound as necessary, and shipped to the Library of Congress and CAP-SEA participant institutions. In addition, some publications are microfiched or scanned for electronic transfer to the United States.

The Kuala Lumpur suboffice is staffed by two Malaysian nationals and is located in the U.S. Embassy compound.
