Johann Baptist Homann was one of the most celebrated cartographer's of his day and established the most successful German publishing house of the eighteenth century. His family continued the business after his death and they dominated the German map market for over a century. This double hemisphere map of the world is considered one of Homann's best works. In addition to the earthbound hemispheres, it includes a double hemisphere representation of the celestial world as seen in classical astronomy. The map has many unusual elements such as an earthquake, a rainbow, the Aetna volcano, cherub style heads blowing the winds around the world and other interesting elements.
