Project Director: Daniel Symonik, PhD and Myron Falken, PhD
Grant Title: Population-Based Birth Defects Surveillance Programs and the Utilization of Surveillance Data by Public Health Programs

Project Summary

The Minnesota Birth Defects Information System (BDIS) uses the birth defects data it collects to improve services for affected children and to evaluate prevention strategies. The BDIS also works with many partners, including Minnesota Department of Health programs; community groups, such as the Folic Acid Council and the March of Dimes; the Minnesota Children with Special Needs program (MCSHN); and local public health agencies.

Project Goals and Activities

Surveillance

  • Implement and evaluate the birth defects information system to generate timely population-based data, starting in selected hospitals in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.
  • Analyze birth defects surveillance data generated by the system to determine rates and trends.
  • Report findings from the system in a timely way.

Prevention
  • Involve appropriate partners within the state to develop and implement a birth defects prevention program.
  • Develop a plan to evaluate birth defects prevention programs

Referrals
  • Maintain relationships with partners within the state to plan and implement activities to improve access for children with birth defects to comprehensive, community-based, family-centered care.
  • Develop a plan to evaluate how effectively and quickly eligible children or families are referred to health and intervention services.
