PRESIDENT BUSH APPROVES NATIONAL PLAN FOR AERONAUTICS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AND RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE
WASHINGTON - Today, President Bush approved the first National Plan for Aeronautics Research and Development and Related Infrastructure. Called for by the President in Executive Order (EO) 13419, the Plan is aligned with and serves as a follow-on to the National Aeronautics Research and Development Policy approved by the President last year.
The aeronautics R&D priorities in the Plan are aligned with the Policy Principles of Mobility, National Security and Homeland Defense, Safety, and Energy and Environment. The Plan establishes high-priority national aeronautics R&D challenges, goals, and supporting (time-phased) objectives for the above Policy Principles, and provides guidance on the path forward for developing an aeronautics research, development, test, and evaluation infrastructure plan.
“This Plan is timely in light of President Bush’s recent actions to reduce air traffic congestion and flight delays,” said Dr. John Marburger, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). “The Plan complements those nearer-term efforts by addressing the longer term research needed to support U.S. aeronautics development through 2020 and transform the nation’s air transportation system.”
The Plan also calls for development of a supplemental report with additional technical content on the R&D goals and objectives and a plan for aeronautics research, development, test and evaluation infrastructure. Consistent with EO 13419, updates to this Plan will be provided every two years. Both the Policy and the Plan were developed by the Aeronautics Science and Technology Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council.
