NHEFS Linked Mortality FileLists of variables at a glance Data file technical characteristics NCHS has conducted a mortality linkage of the NHANES I Epidemiologic Followup Study (NHEFS) with the NCHS National Death Index (NDI). The NHEFS is a longitudinal follow-up study of the adult participants from the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I). The NHEFS cohort includes all 14,407 participants 25-74 years of age who completed a medical examination during the NHANES I survey period between 1971 and 1975. Linkage of the NHEFS survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct studies designed to investigate the association of a variety of health factors with mortality. The current version of the NHEFS linked mortality file is comprehensive in design and includes death information for all deaths including those previously identified during the NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up survey periods (1982-84, 1986, 1987, and 1992). The NHANES I Epidemiologic Followup Survey (NHEFS) linked mortality file contains information based upon the results from a probabilistic match between the NCHS National Death Index (NDI) records and obtained death certificates, as well as previously identified deaths collected during the NHANES I Epidemiology Follow-up study. The NHEFS linked mortality file provides mortality follow-up data from the date of NHANES I survey participation (1971-1975) through December 31, 2000. All NHEFS participants are included on the linked mortality file. Additional variables provided on the file include: assigned vital status, date of death, age of death, underlying and multiple causes of death.variables at a glance NHANES I Sample Sequence Number Eligibility status Final mortality status Date of death Age at death Age when last presumed alive Underlying cause of death codes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) Underlying cause of death recodes (ICD-9 and ICD-10) Multiple cause of death entity axis codes Multiple cause of death record axis codes Date of birth Date of NHANES I exam Age at NHANES I exam List of data file variables available by special request PDF 152 KB Data file technical characteristics The NHEFS linked mortality file is available in SAS and ASCII file formats PDF 123 KB. The total number of records is 14,407. Due to confidentiality requirements, the NHEFS linked mortality data are only accessible through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC). All interested researchers must submit a research proposal to the RDC to use the NHEFS linked mortality data. The RDC offers both on-site and remote user access. Approved researchers will be able to analyze data from the NHEFS standard linked mortality file PDF 123 KB which contains information on NHEFS participant eligibility status, vital status, date of death, age at death, and underlying and contributing causes of death. Additional death certificate data are available by special request PDF 152 KB. Requests for access to special request variables should be clearly documented in the researcher’s RDC proposal.File layout PDF 123 KB Detailed Notes for Selected Variables PDF 14 KB Underlying and Multiple Causes of Death PDF 257 KB Matching Methodology PDF 122 KB Tabular Data PDF 8 KB
