Nancy L. Long

Acting Regional Administrator, Region VII (Kansas City)

Ms. Nancy L. Long brings 32 years of extensive Federal leadership and program management experience to the Regional Administrator position.  Her creativity, innovative management and leadership skills will be fully utilized to support and achieve Region VII’s business objectives in concert with supporting the delivery of key services to the public.

Ms. Long began her Federal career with the ACTION Agency, training VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Volunteers for the four State RVII area.  She also worked closely with community and social service providers leading 60+ management and leadership conferences for some 2000+ local leaders over a two year period.

After a three-year tenure serving as an SSI Claims Representative, Ms. Long joined the Family Support Administration, FSA, a precursor to ACF, serving as the Program Specialist/Acting Program Manager, implementing welfare work programs.  Ms. Long forged a strong working relationship with the Region’s State and Federal officials, local community-based organizations and private industry representatives leading to innovative approaches for welfare families. She also worked collaboratively with Child Welfare, Child Care and Head Start programs to ensure a clear working understanding of this new work program.

As a result of her work, Ms. Long was appointed to the National FSA Welfare Reform Task Group, working in Washington, D.C., drafting the implementing regulations for this Family Support Act of 1988.

Ms. Long has also strong experience with the Child Support Program, serving as the Region’s Program Manager from 1992 – 1996 and 2006-2007.  During these tenures, she served on national Work Groups, developed strategic plans and performance measures with State partners, founded a Regional Child Support Partnership Council, and increased collections for the Region’s children by 142% and paternities established by 125% during her first tenure with Child Support.

With her strong skill set across program areas, Ms. Long was selected to serve as the Special Assistant to the RVII ACF Regional Administrator.  Over the 6 years she served the RA, she provided leadership to various high-profile administrative and program efforts reaching across the Agency’s many programs.  She led the Regions FMFIA; COOP Emergency Planning, Community Liaison and Minority Outreach efforts, Internal Staff and Leadership Retreats, and Staff Capacity Building Training. She also served as Acting Grants Officer during the Agency’s transition period.

Across this long and varied career, Ms. Long has shown a dedicated commitment to bringing a high quality service to the families and children of Region VII, and one which she will continue to champion while serving as the Acting Regional Administrator.

Ms. Long is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University with B.S. degree in Political Science & Sociology.  She and her husband, Ed, have a son and a newly-married daughter and son-in-law.
