United States Society on Dams
2009 Annual Meeting and Conference

• Advancing the knowledge of dam engineering, construction, planning, operation, performance, rehabilitation, decommissioning, maintenance, security and safety;
• Fostering dam technology for socially, environmentally and financially sustainable water resources systems;
• Providing public awareness of the role of dams in the management of the nation's water resources;
• Enhancing practices to meet current and future challenges on dams; and
• Representing the United States as an active member of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD).

• Examines contemporary dam issues, such as dam safety, environmental impacts and dam decommissioning.
• Publishes proceedings and technical reports and white papers.
• Contributes to and distributes ICOLD Publications within the United States.
• Participates in and contributes to international seminars on dams.
• Holds an Annual Meeting and Conference, exhibition and study tour.
• Provides educational information for students and teachers on the USSD Educational Web Page, a free presentation, Water and Dams in Today's World, and dam statistics.
• Has a Student Program, including a scholarship awarded annually to a student enrolled in a dam-related program.

• Provides technology transfer to professionals throughout the United States and the world.
• Publishes a newsletter for USSD Members.
• Is the United States member of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), an international organization of more than 80 countries founded in 1928. ICOLD is the leading non-governmental organization devoted to the issues of dams and dam engineering, including dam safety.
• Is governed by a twelve-member Board of Directors, elected by USSD Members. The Board meets twice annually to review USSD activities and set policies. USSD is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) scientific and educational organization.
