KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grants and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans total more than $2.41 million for individuals, households and businesses affected by the severe storms and flooding in Missouri May 5-18.
Below is a recap of disaster activities as of the close of business on Thursday, July 19, 2007:
To date, FEMA Community Relations representatives going door-to-door have visited more than 2,490 homes, 258 businesses and 204 county/city emergency managers, mayors, commissioners, sheriffs and local officials to explain FEMA disaster assistance programs, promote visits to Disaster Recovery Centers and stress the importance of returning the SBA applications for low-interest disaster loans.
686 registrants have applied for individual assistance through the FEMA toll free registration number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 1-800-462-7585, or online at www.fema.gov. Individual assistance may include temporary housing assistance or support to initiate essential repairs to homes as well as grants for other disaster-related needs such as medical costs and household furnishings not covered by insurance. Registrants may check the status of their application or ask questions by calling the same number.
359 registrations have been approved for assistance;
97 percent of the requested home inspections have been completed by two inspectors in the field.
The majority of inspections are being completed within a day-and-a-half of registration and most disaster registrants are receiving checks in about a week.
$1,536,755 has been approved for disaster registrants from the Individuals and Households Program.
$875,100 has been approved by the SBA in home and business disaster loans.
SBA is the federal government's primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover uninsured and uncompensated losses and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. For information about SBA disaster assistance, call the Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
