Southeast Kansas Gets Needed Water And Ice From FEMA Fast

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has now provided 56 truck loads and two additional 6000 gallon tanker trucks full of water to needy southeast Kansas residents.
Each of the 56 trailers held 16,200 liters of bottled water. In addition, affected residents also received 31 truckloads of ice provided by FEMA. All of these needed provisions were distributed by local officials just after the July 2 major disaster declaration.
Local emergency management officials requested the water and ice originally from the state coordinating office who contacted FEMA for help. FEMA officials worked quickly to ready the water deliveries and purchase the right amount of ice. Since the ice was purchased directly from a local distributor, the requests from Kansas could be filled and delivered immediately.
"The coordination between local, state and federal officials has been excellent," said Michael L. Karl, federal coordinating official for the Kansas disasters. "The ice and water provision is a great example of how smooth the request and delivery process has been for this disaster."
Residents are again reminded to register now for disaster assistance if they need help. Individuals in the counties of Elk, Miami, Montgomery, Neosho and Wilson who suffered damage as a result of the severe flooding that began June 26 should call FEMA and register for assistance as soon as possible.

The toll-free telephone number to register for assistance has operators available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Monday through Saturday. It is also possible to register online at any time on the FEMA website at www.fema.gov.
