COLUMBIA, Mo. -- At the request of officials with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) yesterday extended the deadline to March 1, 2007, for the state, local governments, and certain private non-profit entities affected by the January 2007 ice storm to apply for FEMA's Public Assistance program.

FEMA's Public Assistance program was approved for 34 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis in response to the January winter storms. The jurisdictions are: Barry, Barton, Callaway, Camden , Christian, Cole, Crawford, Dade, Dallas , Dent, Franklin , Gasconade, Greene, Hickory , Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence , Lincoln , Maries, McDonald, Miller, Montgomery , Newton , Osage, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, St. Charles , St. Clair, St. Louis , Stone, Warren , Webster, Wright, and the independent City of St. Louis .

The original deadline for entities in these jurisdictions to apply for Public Assistance was February 14, 2007. The extended deadline is March 1, 2007.

For projects that are approved, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the cost of emergency work and debris removal. State and local governments typically share the balance that FEMA does not fund.

FEMA's Individual Assistance program has not been approved, though damage assessments are in process to determine if Missouri will qualify.
