Myrtle Beach To Strengthen Critical Buildings

Release Date: August 3, 2001
Release Number: R4-01-21

Atlanta, GA -- Three Myrtle Beach, SC, buildings critical to disaster response functions will soon get makeovers and become more hurricane-resistant, thanks to a joint $233,935 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of South Carolina.

The grant will pay to install a combination of high-impact glass and framing and roll-down hurricane shutters in the Myrtle Beach City Hall, the city services building and the public works administration building.

The projects are part of FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which makes grants to local and state governments to plan and complete projects that can reduce the loss of lives and property in disasters. FEMA will contribute 75 percent, or $175,451, of the total project cost. The state of South Carolina will pay the remaining 25 percent.

"Since the functions performed in these buildings are essential for disaster recovery, it is important that they be protected," said Mary Lynne Miller, acting director for FEMA Region IV. "These measures will greatly enhance their ability to weather future hurricanes."

The various upgrades will protect the buildings from wind damage associated with hurricanes as well as water damage resulting from broken or blown out windows.
