Columbus, MS -- A state-federal disaster recovery center will open in Columbus Monday (Nov. 18) to help families that suffered losses in the November 10-11 tornadoes learn the status of their requests for assistance and get information about assistance programs.

Those who have yet to register for assistance should do so by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at 1-800-621-3362, toll-free, from any telephone. Registration is required to receive assistance.

Applicants should be prepared to give their address, phone number, social security number, gross income and casualty insurance information. The TTY registration number for the speech or hearing impaired is 1-800-462-7585.

The recovery center is being established in the former Lowe's home supply store at 2320 Highway 45 N. The hours of operation will be 1-7 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice.

Disaster specialists from FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will provide information on assistance programs and check the status of applications already in the FEMA database.
