Corps of Engineers completes Environmental Assessment on proposed Ada, Minn., flood damage reduction project
Jan. 9, 2008
Release #PA-2009-001

SAINT PAUL, MINN. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, in cooperation with the city of Ada, Minn., is proposing to build a flood damage reduction project to protect Ada from a 200-year flood event and is seeking public comments in regard to an Environmental Assessment completed on this proposed project.

Ada is in the Marsh River watershed, a tributary of the Red River of the North. It is subject to flooding from the Wild Rice River, which can break out of its banks and flow into the Marsh River. The city experienced record flooding in both 1997 and 2002.

The proposed Corps of Engineers/City of Ada project includes realigning of a portion of Judicial Ditch 51, which flows around the north and east sides of Ada, and constructing a levee built to withstand the 200-year flood. The project is expected to cost $8 million of which the federal government would pay 65 percent of the cost.

An Environmental Assessment evaluation on the project and a draft feasibility report have been prepared by the St. Paul District and are available for public review and comment for a period of 30 days, from Jan. 9 to Feb. 9. The Environmental Assessment and report documents are posted on the St. Paul District website at: http://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/fl_damage_reduct/default.asp?pageid=7&subpageid=477

For more information or to submit comments, contact Nan Bischoff, the Corps’ project manager, at 651-290-5426 or nanette.m.bischoff@usace.army.mil.
