How Does Fragile X Syndrome Affect Speech and Language Skills (PDF)
By FPG Child Development Institute , Ed.
FPG Snapshot, 51; January 2008

Summary: This document summarizes findings on research that examines whether language difficulties in children with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) have a different cause than language challenges in children with Down syndrome or autism. Research examines whether having an intellectual disability or autism is the root cause of the communication challenges in a child with FXS or whether having FXS presents a unique set of challenges. Data illustrate some of the communication difficulties of boys with FXS. Findings suggest that boys with FXS are delayed in language comprehension and production of vocabulary and syntax. Although boys with FXS are delayed in their speech production skills, their speech accuracy is similar to that of young children of a similar mental age.
