Summary: This report addresses background information, including definition, history, epidemiology, diagnostic criteria, early signs, neuropathologic aspects, and etiologic possibilities in autism spectrum disorders. The report also provides an algorithm to help the pediatrician develop a strategy for early identification of children with autism spectrum disorders. The primary care physician has an important role in early identification. The primary care physician should conduct surveillance at every well-child visit and be a good listener and recognize the early subtle red flags that indicate the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder.
