USDA Seeking Nominations for Membership to National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspections
Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Bridgette Keefe

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2006—The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced that nominations are being accepted for membership to the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI).

The NACMPI was established in 1971 to advise and make recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture on meat, poultry and egg products inspection programs. Membership is drawn from a broad range of groups interested in food safety including consumers, producers, processors, exporters and importers of meat and poultry products, as well as those in academia, public health, and federal and state government. Committee appointments are made by the Secretary. To ensure diverse committee membership, USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service is working with constituent groups that include minority owned businesses, 1890 Land Grant Colleges, Native American tribal associations and other groups to encourage members of minority groups, women and persons with disabilities to apply.

The full committee consists of no fewer than 16 and no more than 18 members, and each person selected is expected to serve a two-year term. Existing members are permitted to serve three consecutive two-year terms. The committee generally meets twice a year and addresses food safety policy issues affecting USDA.

The names of the nominees and their curricula vitae or resumes must be received no later than October 12, 2006 and should be submitted to Dr. Barbara J. Masters, administrator, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), USDA, in care of the advisory committee specialist, Room 405, Aerospace Building, 901 D Street, SW., Washington, D.C.

Applications are available on FSIS' Web site at www.fsis.usda.gov/FSISForms/AD-755.pdf. The submissions may also be sent electronically to NACMPI@fsis.usda.gov, or by fax to (202) 690-6519. Comments are welcome on the notice for nominations and may be submitted either through the Federal eRulemaking Portal at www.regulations.gov or electronically to FSIS.RegulationsComments@usda.gov.

For further details concerning the nominations, please contact Ms. Loraine Cannon at (202) 690-6647.
