INTRODUCTION

West Thompson's gatehouse on a foggy morning
West Thompson Dam lies on the Quinebaug River in the township of Thompson, Connecticut, about one quarter mile upstream from its confluence with the French River. The dam is part of a network of six flood control facilities in the Thames River Basin that were constructed and are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This network helps to control flooding all the way from the upstream tributaries of the Thames River to the Long Island Sound.
