The album features two generations of African American music-making, recorded by Alan Lomax in 1942 and by David Evans in 1969-71. Included are rare recordings of African American fife and drum bands, quills (panpipes), the one-stringed "bow diddley," fiddle, banjo, and other rare vocal and instrumental combinations.
