Summit Bridge Roadway Construction Project

Scope
This project involves the reconstruction of the deteriorated southbound SR896 concrete
pavement, the installation of a concrete median barrier and upgrades to the drainage and
guardrail systems. The limits of this project are the intersection of SR896/Bethel Church
Road to the intersection of SR896/SR71 (Not including the Summit Bridge deck). The
northbound SR896 pavement will be reconstructed approximately one year after the
completion of this project.

Project Management
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is administering the jointly funded
project which includes a portion of roadway that is under Delaware Department of Transportation's (DelDOT) maintenance responsibility.

Project Timeline
Project Advertisement: August 2007
Bid Openings: September 2007
Contractor Notice-to-Proceed: October 2007
Begin Construction: March 2008

Project Cost
The estimated construction cost for this project is $6,000,000.00

Project Impacts
Repairs will be made to the lanes approaching and descending from the southbound and northbound sides of the Summit Bridge, causing lane restrictions. The project will see the removal and replacement of the deteriorated pavement and other repairs. Workers will initially begin removing portions of the center island at the north and south ends of the project area. During the initial work period, traffic will be restricted to one southbound lane on portions of the bridge and its approaches.
