FLORIDA -- The Marion County Composite Squadron Color Guard finished first in a field of 10 Florida Wing color guards in the wing Cadet Competition, held Nov. 8 at Patrick Air Force Base.

For 12 hours the teams went through the many aspects of the competition in drill, testing and panel quiz, ending with a one-mile run.

When the final results were announced Nov. 9 at the base theater, the Marion County Composite cadets had placed first in standard drill, second in inspection and third in the written test and mile run.

That left the announcement of the final placing. After second place went to the Gainesville Composite Squadron team, which had finished first the previous year, a hush fell across the audience.

Then first place was announced:

Marion County.

The team members and their escorts jumped for joy, and a loud yell echoed across the auditorium.

The team consisted of:

  • Chief Sr. Master Sgt. (1st Sgt.) Samuel Dauss -- Team captain, senior guard and a member of the 2008 National Color Guard Team.

  • Cadet Staff Sgt. Mary Dauss junior flag carrier.

  • Cadet Airman Joseph Miller senior guard.

  • Cadet Airman 1st Class Richard Burke junior guard.

The two senior members escorting the team were Maj. Frank Swain and 1st Lt. Cynthia Sweitzer.

Later, the Gainesville Composite team passed on the wing flag and the rifles to the new champions.

The team is now looking forward to the Southeast Region competition in March at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The national competition follows in June at Evergreen Air and Space Museum near McMinnville, Ore.
