I am very pleased to announce two key appointments within the Library of Congress Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. Gene DeAnna has been named to the position of Head of the division's Recorded Sound Section, and Mike Mashon has been named as Head of the Moving Image Section. Gene DeAnna holds a B.A. in English Literature and a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland. He began his career with the Library of Congress as a Playback Technician in the Recorded Sound Section in 1981. After receiving his M.L.S., he became an Acquisitions Librarian at the U.S. Bureau of the Census, and later headed that Library's Technical Services Unit. He returned to LC and the MBRS Division to work on the American Memory Project in 1990, and produced three interactive videodiscs of early actuality films - all now part of the American Memory website, as well as an audio CD-ROM of WWI-era political speeches. Since then he has worked in the Division's Recorded Sound Section as a Reference Librarian and later as Head of the Recorded Sound Processing Unit. Mike Mashon holds a B.S. in Microbiology from Louisiana State University, a Masters in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Maryland. Before joining the Library in 1998, he was Curator of the Library of American Broadcasting in College Park, MD. As Curator of the Moving Image Section, he has been responsible for acquisitions, establishing preservation priorities, external loans, and coordinating programs in the Mary Pickford Theater. Mike has presented papers at conferences ranging from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies to the Semiotic Society. He chairs the Television Studies Commission for the International Federation of Television Archives, and is co-chair of AMIA's Academic-Archival Interest Group. He is the author of several articles, the most of recent of which is an essay on the relationship between NBC and J. Walter Thompson. Gene and Mike have served ably as acting section heads in recent months, and both were directly responsible for a number of critical achievements in our ongoing transition to the National AudioVisual Conservation Center in Culpeper.
