Works just fine! Do this all the time on heavily damaged discs. If there's valuable signal around 20 Hz (for example), then you need a cartridge that can faithfully reproduce 10 Hz, and is reasonable flat in the low-end - otherwise you're going to get some low frequency bumps that you may have to fix later. But in some cases, half speed is the only way to play a damaged disc.
