The Audio Specialist reports to the Archivist for Audio Collections and assists with the arrangement, description, preservation and duplication of sound materials in archival holdings of the Hoover Institution. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Reformat, preserve, and catalog sound recordings according to archival standards for audio collections • Handle analog and/or digital preservation reformatting processes with vendors, including materials preparation, delivery or shipment, tracking, and log-in upon return • Perform quality control checks on reformatted analog and digital copies transferred either in-house or received from vendors, and return defective products for re-work • Describe collections of sound recordings and catalog individual sound recordings using databases or other computer applications • Re-house, label, and shelve sound recordings • Communicate with researchers and manage use/licensing agreements and payments for reproductions, follow copyright laws and policies, and maintain related documentation • Identify sound recordings problems and recommend solutions, especially in connection with preservation issues • Stay abreast of technological developments as they relate to archival sound recordings, and recommend future needs • Assignments may include some work with archival video and film materials, light paging and re-shelving of archival materials, and occasional reference desk duty, including some Saturdays QUALIFICATIONS Undergraduate degree in history, political science, or related field, or demonstrated training in audio engineering; strong knowledge of 20th and 21st century history; at least 2 years experience in an audiovisual archive, library, or similar organization; knowledge of audio formats and elements, related playback equipment, digital editing software (WaveLab, Pro Tools, Sound Forge, etc) and related preservation issues and standards; ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, discretion, and initiative, interact with a diverse public, work collegially with supervisor, peers, and other staff, especially fellow audiovisual and preservation staff, and exhibit understanding of importance of public service to both the Hoover Institution and outside clientele; strong administrative aptitude with excellent record-keeping and computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and digitizing of sound and moving image materials; highly developed organizational skills, with great attention to detail, and ability to coordinate numerous activities and a high volume of requests under tight deadlines; excellent written and oral communication skills, including spelling, grammar, and composition skills for drafting reports and correspondence; ability to coordinate information with vendors, researchers, and donors, and to collaborate with Hoover Fellows, Stanford faculty, and distinguished visitors; ability to lift 30 lbs, and to handle a fully loaded book truck; and possess current California drivers license.
