The Library of Congress recently published Boxes for the Protection of Books: Their Design and Construction, a looseleaf guide for book conservators, museum technicians and library curators who wish to construct protective boxes for items in their collections.
Compiled by Lage Carlson, supervisor of the Phased Conservation Section, and other members of the Library's Conservation Office, this edition is a revised and updated version of Boxes for the Protection of Rare Books: Their Design and Construction, which was published in 1982.
"Protective boxing continues to be an important and cost- effective strategy in preserving our book collections for future generations," explained Diane Kresh, the library's director for preservation. The manual describes the various types of boxes constructed in the Phased Section of the Conservation Office, ranging from the simple card box and the polyethylene book jacket to the complex book box with portfolio.
The book is for sale from the Superintendent of Documents for $20, New Orders, P.O. Box 371954, Pittsburgh, PA, 15250-7954, Fax (202) 512-2250.
