Kristen Hileman's Pick: Richard Artschwager

Two Indentations

I like this work because it is at once a highly literal demonstration of the basic elements of painting and a challenge to the idea that painting is a "special" category. The "two indentations" of the title are a three-dimensional rendering of one-point perspective, and the laminate over wood replicates the essential formula of painting as a surface of color applied over a support. However, the end result appears to be more akin to sculpture, or even a piece of furniture, than a painting. So, in the end, how can one define painting, sculpture, and functional objects? Are hard and fast definitions possible in contemporary art?
