Thanks for posting this, My institution (Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive) uses FileMaker in conjunction with collections, imaging, and EAD. In addition, several members of two EAD-based consortial efforts are also using a shared FileMaker database for imaging and EAD purposes. Suffice to say that I'm a fan of the ease of use and cross-platform capabilities of FileMaker. Many smaller museums use FM because of it's low support cost. However, I can testify that FileMaker's new "XML capabilities" are not all that new or useful *at this point*. FileMaker can do XML one-way; it can export or deliver information in XML formats to the web. However it could do this years ago through simple calculation fields (we used it to export EAD container lists). The new Filemaker cannot import XML in any form however. So, it is not useful for two-way data exchange using XML, or for managing XML-based data. FileMaker is built on a plug-in architecture however, so if anyone builds an XML import plugin for FM, I will personally guarantee them film passes for life! Until, hopefully the next version....:) Richard Rinehart ---------------- Digital Media Director Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive @ University of California www.bampfa.berkeley.edu ---------------- & Board of Directors Museum Computer Network www.mcn.edu >Macintosh and/or FileMaker users might be interested in the following >item from the respected TidBITS e-newsletter... > >--MIKE WIDENER, Archivist/Rare Books Librarian, Tarlton Law Library, >School of Law, University of Texas at Austin | 727 E.
