From 1935 to 1943 a team of exceptional photographers traveled across the United States documenting America's experience of the Great Depression and World War II for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information. This team included some of the century's most talented photojournalists--Dorthea Lange, Ben Shahn, Gordon Parks, Russell Lee, Walker Evans. Originally hired to compile a series of pictures for the government that would rally opinion in favor of New Deal programs, they were instructed "to photograph anything, anywhere in the United States...that seemed interesting and vital." This is exactly what they did. While these long-admired photographs have been inherited as our collective memory of the 1930s and 1940s, there has been little discussion of the circumstances surrounding their creation. Documenting America takes a fresh look at these remarkable photographs. Edited by: Carl Fleischhauer and Beverly W. Brannan with essays by Lawrence W.
