NCES 2002171 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study:1996-2001 (BPS:1996/2001) Methodology Report
This report describes the methods and procedures used for the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study: 1996-2001 (BPS:1996/2001). These students, who started their postsecondary education during the 1995-96 academic year, were first interviewed in 1996 as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:96). A follow-up interview was conducted in 1998, during the third academic year since entry. This second and final follow-up used telephone and field interviewing to collect data from first-time beginning students in 4-year, 2-year, and less-than-2-year public, private, nonprofit, and private, for-profit institutions. Interviews focused on degree attainment, undergraduate experiences, additional education and training, transition into employment, current job, demographics, family formation, civic participation, and disability status.

NCES 2002152 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study 1999-2000 [NPSAS:2000] Methodology Report
This report describes the methods and procedures used for the 2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:2000). NPSAS:2000 is a comprehensive study of financial aid among postsecondary education students in the United States and Puerto Rico that provides information on trends in financial aid and on the ways in which families pay for postsecondary education. NPSAS:2000 included important changes from previous NPSAS surveys (conducted in 1987, 1990, 1993, and 1996) in its sample design and collection of data. For example, the current study is the first to utilize a Web-based computer-assisted data entry (Web-CADE) system for student record abstraction. However, sufficient comparability in survey design and instrumentation was maintained to ensure that important comparisons with past NPSAS studies could be made.

NCES 2002118 The Persistence of Employees Who Pursue College Study
This Stats in Brief uses data from the base year and first follow-up surveys of the 1995-96 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study to examine the persistence and completion rates of students who define themselves primarily as "employees who decided to enroll in school." These "employees who study" were found to have persistence rates similar to those of other students when their goal did not involve obtaining a postsecondary credential, or when their goal was to obtain a postsecondary certificate. Among those seeking an associate's degree or higher degree, however, "employees who study" had lower persistence rates than their peers. Differences in the backgrounds and life situations of "employees who study" may help account for these differences in persistence.

BPS:1996/2001 was conducted in the sixth academic year since the start of their postsecondary education. This report describes the methods and procedures used for the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study First Follow-up 1996-98 (BPS:96/98). These students, who started their postsecondary education during the 1995-1996 academic year, were first interviewed in 1996 as part of the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study 1996 (NPSAS:96). NCES 2000029 Vocational Education in the United States: Toward the Year 2000
Vocational education at the turn of the century is an enterprise in transition. This publication addresses the primary question about the size of the enterprise at the secondary and postsecondary levels and whether it is growing, shrinking, or holding constant over time. The report also examines high school transcripts and presents findings about the academic preparation of high school students who participate in vocational education, relevant school reform efforts, and transitions after high school. To set the context for understanding these findings, the report describes economic and labor market trends and their implications for vocational programs, as well as changing workplace practices and employer perspectives on worker skills and proficiency.
